              Dance Movies: Our top picks!

There have been countless dance related movies dating back to the 1930's, and here's OUR LIST of the very best along with brief descriptions. Whether you'd like to rent them, buy them or just keep an eye out for them on your TV schedule, these are for your viewing pleasure. The following is how we rate them:
Dance TV worth watching!
Dancing with the Stars (ABC)
Who would have ever imagined that a Ballroom dance show would become one of the two biggest shows on TV? We sure didn't but you can't help but notice the winning combination of celebrity favorites, great featured entertainment and great ballroom dancers finally getting their due. There are so many reasons why this show is successful but one of the best is the fact that they really educate people on dance while making it entertaining and interesting. If you've never seen it, we recommend it for all of the above.
So You Think You Can Dance (FOX)
Maybe the most underrated show on TV, this one offers some of the most amazing dancing, choreography and entertainment ANYWHERE. This show has provided us with some of the best young dancers in the world, and some of the most amazing, beautiful, moving dance pieces we have ever seen. There's also plenty of humor with very entertaining judges who happen to be some of the most renowned dance experts in the business. Some of the top young dance pros on Dancing with the Stars actually came from this show.
Dance with me
This movie has a very good story of romance through dance and some seriously HOT and FUN dance scenes. It's very unique how they show the difference between the cultural street dance styles and strictly ballroom-competitive styles. Ultimately this film shows that dance is universal and crosses all boundaries.
Mambo Kings
This is one of our favorites and just shy of a 5star rating. A great period piece loosely based on a true story. It's about 2 Cuban brothers that were part of the HUGE revolution of Latin music and dancing that took place in the late 40's, and into the 60's. Great story, great music and some excellent dance sequences.
Shall we dance?
This movie is about people "finding themselves" through dance, and is an excellent all around film that has great dancing and great loveable characters.
This is a remake of the original Japanese version. This one does capture the same overall feel with it's characters, humor and passion, we have to say, the original is still the best and both are a MUST SEE!
Take the lead
This film is based on a true story of a dance instructor who changed the lives of high school students with Ballroom dancing. Although this doesn't quite measure up to some of the great ones, it does have a very interesting REAL story, some great dance scenes and very uplifting. If you're a Antonio Banderas fan, you'll thoroughly enjoy it!
Strictly Ballroom
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! One of our very favorites of all time. Everyone's taste is different but even if you don't enjoy this one as much as we did, you'll definitely be entertained. This Aussie made film has it all: romance, comedy, drama, great story, great acting, lots of great dancing and some quirky Aussie humor (flashback sequences). MUST SEE!
"Mad Hot" Ballroom
It's maximum entertainment in the form of an award winning documentary film. This is a real-life story of a dance instructor that created a ballroom program for the inner city kids of New York. Not only were the results life-changing for countless kids of New York, it has inspired countless programs of the same throughout the country.
White Christmas
When it comes to the magic formula of holiday classics and great dance classics, you can't beat this one. Not only does this one provide the ultimate in holiday atmosphere and sentiment, we see Vera Ellen (one of the great dancers of all time) at her very best. Danny Kay provides the humor and surprises us performing one of the great all time dance scenes with Vera Ellen.
Shall we dance? (original version)
Most people would not know it but this is the original version of the 2004 remake with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. Although dubbed or in subtitles, this is a GREAT movie and easily the better of the two. Great dancing, great acting, very exciting, funny and moving. LOVE THIS ONE!
Dirty Dancing
Here's another great period piece. This classic gives us a feel of what it was like in more conservative times and how the spicy, controversial Latin styles changed the face of dance. This film also provided us with one of the all-time classic cheesy lines: "Nobody puts Baby in the corner." GREAT STUFF!

Fred Astaire - Astaire & Rogers movies
It's impossible to list all the great Fred Astaire movies or even the list of classics with Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers. They all fall into the category of the "best of the best." There are a few great DVD compilations out there including one we found, produced by TCM Classics (pictured).

Holiday Inn
This is definitely an Astaire classic. Another film with that great holiday atmosphere along with several Fred Astaire classic dance scenes. Put that together with one of the GREAT crooner-actors like Bing Crosby, and you have absolute magic. Marjorie Reynolds, a great actress in her own right, is outstanding in her role opposite these two stars.
Instruction in Swing, Latin and Ballroom styles
Resources: Other than renting or your TV schedule, you can find these films via Amazon, Ebay and for $5 or less, you may find them at the Pawn shop.
Music: our list of top picks for dancing!

FREE for you to download & printout!

This is our compilation listof great social-ballroom dance and listening music. This list includes many of the greatest tunes from the 40's to the present.
The idea of the list being, you can research and listen to the selections on the internet, start your own collection from downloads, purchase from your local music store or go to places like E-bay where you can really find some great deals on stuff like CD's.
The other use of the list is to have it available when you go out dancing and you'll know that certain music/songs go with certain dance styles, you'll be able to make requests of a band or DJ so they can play the tunes you would like to dance to.

Some of the selections will say N/A which simply means we don't have all the necessary information so you'll have to look it up.

This is just the beginning, even though it's a pretty elaborate collection to start with, we have lots more and will continue to add to the list. When we have updates of music for the list, we'll make it so you can just copy the updates rather than print the whole list each time.
